Qualsiasi riferimento al thread count (TC) si riferisce alla definizione commerciale comunemente accettata: il numero di fili per pollice quadrato (inch) per ottenere il numero totale dei fili, inclusi i filati ritorti.
Non si tratta di un riferimento alla definizione “tecnica” come promulgata dalla norma ASTM D 3775 che considera i filati ritorti come un unico filo. L'applicazione della norma D 3775 ai filati ritorti si tradurrà in un numero di fili inferiore rispetto alla definizione commerciale.
